Fellowship in the Excellencies of Christ
Writing to Timothy, the apostle Paul identified a faith and a love which are only found in Christ Jesus. 1Tit1:13-15. Essentially, there are all sorts of faith, but there is only one kind of faith that is in the power of God, and not according to the wisdom of men. 1 Cor 2:5. This is the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What is the manner of the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ? Quite simply, His faith believes that we will believe His word! He believes that when His word is proclaimed to us, it will generate within us a desire to believe His word, and then, also, to obey His word. However, to believe and obey, we will need His grace, for none of us can choose to believe or obey while we are bound by sin.

With the preached word of God comes the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Upon our hearing His word, His grace cuts us loose, for just a moment, to do one of two things: either to choose to believe His word or to step back into unbelief and bondage. This grace is called ‘prevenient grace’. The righteousness of Christ’s faith supplies to us His prevenient grace, whereby we are set free to choose to believe and then, by grace, to obey His word. This is the word of our sonship that He is proclaiming to us.
The Heart of True Hospitality
The Scripture instructs us to abide in God’s love continually. Joh 15:9. As the Holy Spirit continues to pour the love of God into our hearts, we are equipped to love, care for, and show hospitality to others by the Spirit. Concerning the subject of care for others, the apostle John asked, ‘Whoever sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?’ 1Jn 3:17. By the love of God, we care for another’s ‘whole person’, both their inner and their outer man. When a person orders their life and their house by this dimension of givenness, it indicates that they have been filled with the love of God.

Paul said that great honour was to be bestowed upon the virtuous widow. He described her as having a reputation for good works, bringing up children, showing hospitality to strangers, washing the saints’ feet, assisting those in distress, and devoting herself to every good work. 1Ti 5:9-10. Through her love and service, this woman demonstrated that a godly culture is much broader than showing hospitality in our homes. Our entire way of living is to fulfil Christ’s commandment to love one another as He has loved us. Joh 15:9,12.
